Is NDA Anti Environment
Since the NDA government came to power in 2014 there has been an assault on India’s environment protection framework. As the world moves consciously towards stricter and more comprehensive regulations to combat climate change and environmental degradation the NDA has systematically undermined environment laws. In 2019 India ranked 177 out of 180 in the Environment Protection Index. It is therefore most surprising that the draft EIA does not seek to address any of these concerns but rather dismantles India’s protection paradigm and gives a free pass to corporates and industries to escape liability for environmental damage. It proposes several controversial amendments which are not just detrimental to the environment and public health but are also highly undemocratic.
